The original sequel to Fantasy Zone was developed for the SG-Mark III and a port of Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa, later made it's way to the Arcade on Sega's System E board shortly after. While enjoyable, both versions fail to match both the graphical fidelity and responsiveness of the original game, given that the System E was a lower spec board than the System 16A. Some 20 or so years later, Sega, alongside the porting wizards at M2, developed a remake of the Fantasy Zone II on a modified version of the System 16 board, dubbed the System 16C and Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa.
Story wise, having saved the Fantasy Zone from Menon forces, a new threat, the Nenon, have emerged forcing our protagonist, Opa-Opa to, once again, take the fight to the 'evolved' alien menace...
Often dubbed Fantasy Zone II DX, the remake made some significant changes from the original sequel. DX introduced the concept of each stage having a Bright and Dark side, with the latter not only featuring a title change for each stage, enemies are now stronger, a new enemy type that constantly spawns and each boss equipped with more aggressive attack patterns. To counter these new threats, enemy bases offer more cash upon defeat to spend in the, now hidden, Dark Side shop, which stocks more powerful weaponary.
Upon defeating certain bases, portals for either the Dark or the Bright side levels, open up, so it's possible to switch between both at any time. This feature is essential for survival, particularly on harder difficulty levels and I will speak more about this when discussing high level play.
